Capetownape

Daniel Poggenpoel better know by his artist name; Capetownape, is a South African immigrant that masquerades as a full time car insurance salesman in Vancouver, Canada while creating art every other conceivable moment. He hails from the Mother City of Cape Town. His style is raw, edgy and always clear cut in black and white.

What is your favorite artistic medium?

I use regular black ballpoint pen on paper and oil markers on canvas panels or bus stops.

When did you first notice your artistic abilities?

It all started when I recreated Michelangelo’s Sistine chapel piece on my bedroom ceiling as a naive 4yr old. My balance on the ladder and use of the broken crayons at my disposal were equally sublime. I’ve moved away from color ever since.

When did you get into smoking weed?

At 19, I was a late bloomer and waited to finish high school before I started smoking the Durban poison and Swazi that was prevalent in Cape Town in those days.

When did you first realize that smoking weed could help/enhance your creativity? And how does it help with your creative process?

Smoking and drawing went hand in my early smoking days. I found that weed elevated any kind of thinking on a piece and allowed me to just flow with then pen; to create spontaneously.

Has cannabis ever helped you to collaborate or network with other artists?

Smoking bud back in the day allowed me to meet up with several graffiti artists and taggers in the Cape Town hoods. Not to mention that I have some current pieces up at my local dispensary, Eden Medicinal in Vancouver for sale.

What is your favorite method of getting high?

Smoking joints with a bit of tobacco and ALWAYS a filter

Who are some other cannabis advocates that you may respect or that have inspired you?

The 4 rappers of Mount Kushmore no doubt, Dave Chappelle, Curren$y and Action Bronson; I regularly smoke and draw to their shit. Also, anyone who has ever drawn a weed leaf in a public washroom.

Has being a cannabis user ever affected your life negatively?

Only the one time that I came into work faded AF after hittin’ dabs; I had caught Action Bronson doing a show in Vancouver at my dispensary.

How has smoking weed allowed your career as an artist/musician to develop or grow?

It has allowed me to concentrate less on other people's bullshit and to concentrate more on my art and developing my style.

Do you feel that bringing public awareness to cannabis inspired art and music can help lift the stigma that cannabis artists and users throughout the world might feel?

Awareness to any kind of art is crucial for us to move forward as a species but I also feel that cannabis users in any field shouldn't even consider there being a stigma to begin with.

How do you think that we can eliminate the negative outlook that non-cannabis users might have for cannabis using artists and musicians?

Just don't give a shit what people think. It’s simple mind over matter. If you don't mind it doesn't matter.
